The 2nd Greatest Team Ever
This is the page for SS Lazio, my other team. "Glory hunter!" I hear you cry, but hear me out first. My dad supported SS Lazio fanatically for his whole life and now I am following his example. I've even seen Lazio play at the Olimpico in Rome on four occasions (a lot more games than most Man U fans have) and here I'll keep track of all the - normally load-a-rubbish - transfer rumours that float about like unflushed turds.

Latest SS Lazio News

04 May 2002: Club captain Alessandro Nesta is being linked with every club in Europe - the latest is Juventus with a 40 million plus deal. Sounds like crap to me.

04 May 2002: Barcelona apparently want top scorer Crespo with a Kluivert and cash deal. That is definitely shite, they'd never sell Kluivert like that, he's one of their best players.

04 May 2002: Now that Roberto Mancini has been confirmed as our manager next year I seriously doubt that either of the players above will be sold.

05 May 2002: Another day, another Nesta rumour. He's still being linked with Juve on the day we play for a European place next season at home to league leader's Inter.

05 May 2002: Lazio 4-2 Inter great result for us - we go into the UEFA Cup next year. Apparently Veron has walked out on Man U and has had talks with Mancini about a possible return.

08 May 2002: Apparently Claudio Lopez and Gaizka Mendieta have agreed deals to Atletico Madrid for next year. No official announcement from Lazio yet, so take it with a pinch of salt.

09 May 2002: Mancini has been officially announced as the new manager. I'll expect him to try and bring Veron back if he can. And we're apparently looking to bring in some Spanish striker called Alonso (?) for 4 million.

10 May 2002: President Cragnotti has had a go at star striker Crespo for his bad attitude. Expect stuff about him leaving.

11 May 2002: Lazio linked with move for Ljungberg but he wants to stay in London with Arsenal. After the Crespo-Cragnotti argument rumours all over the place about who could replace the Argentinian hitman - Rivaldo and Kluivert seem favourite (if Crespo leaves, that is).

12 May 2002: Keeper Angelo Perruzi has to have a knee operation after suffering an injury in the Inter game (and not telling anyone). He should be ok for the pre-season stuff. And Real Madrid are apparently preparing a bid for Crespo.

12 May 2002: Millions of bids for Nesta - Inter want him for 40 million with Adriano and Juve want him for 40 million with Davids. Hopefully Mancini won't be stupid enough to sell the world's best central defenders.

14 May 2002: Apparently Nesta would be willing to take a pay cut in order to stay at Lazio. He thinks that he'd be just as well off earning a little less than he does now.

15 May 2002: We'll be playing Derby in a pre-season friendly at Pride Park on the 5th of August. I'll post the other friendlies up when I find 'em.

19 May 2002: Could be signing little Argentinian geezer Aimar from Valencia, which would be great.

21 May 2002: Yawn. Rumours for Crespo and Nesta all over the show. I don't really believe any of 'em.

24 May 2002: Dacourt has said no to a move and despite what I've said it now looks likely that Mr. Crespo will leave during the summer (which isn't too bad coz we should get a load of cash and a good player in exchange for a player if that quality). Also, Mancini's been following Crespo's fellow Aregentine Marcelo Gallardo - who is a very good attacking midfielder, something we could do with.

31 May 2002: Yes I know it's been a while since I last wrote anything, but I've been so distraught that we've been stupid enough to put Nesta up for auction. Bidding apparently starts at 37.5m and Juve look like the most likely club. Too many players to mention linked to moves to Lazio but rest assured, I have recovered now and, with kleenex at my side, I will trudge on with the news as and when it appears.

3 June 2002: Okay, this is complicated but try to keep up. Roma now want to sign Nesta (not over my dead body), we've agreed a deal for Manfredini from Chievo but he won't sign until he gets confirmation from Mancini, we've also signed Eriberto from Chievo but he's part owned by Bologna (I'm still curious as to which part) and they don't want to sell so we're offering them Liverani and Colonesse in exchange for their Eriberto parts. Now Barcelona want Mendieta as well as Crespo, with Mendieta as the first choice summer signing. Also, after telling Favalli he's wanted at the club, Mancini is now trying to exchange the long-serving defender for Juve's Mark Juliano. Got all that? No? Oh well.

6 June 2002: Apparently the club president, Sergio Cragnotti, is in Barcelona right now finalising a deal that'll take Crespo and Mendieta to Barca with Rivaldo and 40 million coming the other way. I can live with that.

7 June 2002: It was kind of awkward having so many Lazio players in the Argentina squad today, but I got over it. Hehehe. 1-0.

8 June 2002: Now Rivaldo's saying he thinks Lazio are a great team, but he wants to stick out his contract at Barca. Fine by me.

9 June 2002: Looks pretty likely that Mendieta'll end up at Barca next season with Rivaldo coming the other way. Oh, and Lazio are officially the best Italian club. Over the past five years we've done, overall, the best in Europe, Serie A and are 5th in Europe. Real Madrid are top of that list.

10 June 2002: Mendieta IS going to Barca on a season long loan with an option to buy next year. Lopez is probably going to Atletico Madrid.

12 June 2002: Two Lazio players scored in the cup today; Crespo and Mendieta both hit the net. Apparently there's a big deal with us Juve and Man U worth over 100 million squid. Nesta'll go to Man U along with Thuram, with Veron coming back to us. Sounds kinda funny but there you go.

18 June 2002: Apparently we have first option on Rivaldo until the 10th of July and Cragnotti hopes to tie up a deal before the end of the week. Good, good. Oh yeah, unlucky Italy, they deserved to win and if Totti dived, then so did Owen against the Argies.

24 June 2002: Now Rivaldo's saying he doesn't want to leave and Cragnotti's saying we'll do anything to sign him so blueergh. You're guess is as good as mine frankly. Also supposed to be signing Enrico Chiesa, Roberto Baggio and the Perugia captain Enzo Tedesco.

29 June 2002: Looks prety certain that we'll sign Manfredini and Eriberto now that Chievo have brought all of him. Rivaldo move is on the rocks now that he wants to stay at Barca and Inter and Juve have agreed to not offer more than 15 million quid and some players for Nesta. It seems that Cragnotti'll have to sell him at cut price (no thank you) or keep him (yes bloody please).

5 July 2002: Okay, we've signed Manfredini and there have still been no real offers for Crespo or Nesta who keep saying that they both want to stay. Fine by me.

11 July 2002: Okay we haven't signed Manfredini - don't ask me - and the deal for Nesta going to Inter seems to have collapsed (oh what a shame).

13 July 2002: Deal to Inter for Nesta might be back on after Zanetti agreed in principal to move to Lazio.

23 July 2002: I know, I haven't updated. Let's just say we were all bad and leave it at that okay? Lazio won 10-0 in a friendly against FC Messa (?)
and there isn't enough room to list all the scorers. The Nesta move is almost definitely OFF for good and the moves for Eriberto and Manfredini are just about done. Good, finally. Oh, and Lazio and Roma along with six other teams could be chucked out of the Italian team coz we're so deep in debt. We have about a week to sort it all out. Shouldn't be a problem.

25 July 2002: Lazio 6-0 Salerno. A double from Crespo, Lopez, Liverani and Gottardi give Lazio a thumping win at their training ground in Vigo Di Fassa. We also beat Napoli 1-0 the other day with Inzaghi getting the only goal. Rivaldo's been released from his contract and is available on a free so expect us to make an offer.

27 July 2002: AC Milan look set to get Rivaldo, and there's rumours that we're gonna do a swap deal with Man U - Crespo and Veron, plus our debt being wiped out. I think that is a shit deal, Crespo's worth more than Veron after that last season.

5 September 2002: Noooooooo! Nesta has gone. Can we all stand for a minute's silence.....Thank you. Oh, and Crespo's gone and all. Nesta to Milan for about 22 million (bargain) and Crespo to Inter for 17 million. We've signed Chiesa on a free and got Bernardo Corradi as part of the Crespo deal. He scored, along with Fiore, in a 2-1 win over Trnana last night. Last week we drew 2-2 with Champions Juventus too. Oh, and the deals for Sorin, Manfredini and Oddo have all been agreed.
